1. READING
THE AMAZON THEATRE
The Amazon Theatre (Teatro Amazonas) was built during the Belle Époque at a time when fortunes were made in the rubber boom. Construction of the Amazon Theater was first proposed in 1881 by a member of the House of Representatives, Antonio Jose Fernandes Júnior, the idea being to construct a jewel in the heart of the Amazonian forest and to make Manaus one of the great centers of civilization.
NEGRO RIVER
Rio Negro (Portuguese: Rio Negro, Spanish: Río Negro, English: Negro River) is the largest left tributary of the Amazon and the largest black water river in the world. It has its sources along the watershed between the Orinoco and the Amazon basins, and also connects with the Orinoco by way of the Casiquiare canal. In Colombia, where the sources are located, it is called the Guainía River. Its main affluent is the Vaupés, which disputes with the headwaters of the Guaviare branch of the Orinoco, the drainage of the eastern slope of the Andes of Colombia. The Negro River flows into the Solimões River to form the Amazon River below Manaus, Brazil.
AMAZON RIVER
The Amazon River is the largest and longer river in the world; it's also the main artery of the whole Amazon rainforest system and washes most of the villages and towns in the region. If you make a trip up or down the Amazon River you will have the opportunity to know the ecosystem in all its plenitude .
MEETING OF WATERS
The Meeting of Waters (Portuguese: Encontro das Águas) is the confluence between the Negro River, a river with dark (almost black coloured) water, and the sandy-coloured Amazon River or Solimões River, as it is known the upper section of the Amazon in Brazil. For 6 km (3.7 mi) the river's waters run side by side without mixing. It is one of the main tourist attractions of Manaus, Brazil.
This phenomenon is due to the differences in temperature, speed and water density of the two rivers. The Negro River flows at near 2 km per hour at a temperature of 28°C, while the Solimões River flows between 4 to 6 km per hour a temperature of 22°C.
ANAVILHANAS ISLANDS
In the Rio Negro, between Manaus and Novo Airão, are the Anavilhanas Islands, an archipelago of 400 islands and islets, with hundreds of lakes, watercourses, igapós and igarapés, extending for some 90km/55mi. The Anavilhanas Nature Reserve (area 350,000 hectares/875,000 acres) offers a complete cross-section of the Amazonian eco-system.
NEGRO RIVER BRIDGE
The Negro River Bridge in Manaus - Brazil is set for completion by the end of the year. The 3,600-meter-long span across one of the largest tributaries of the Amazon, Rio Negro, will be one of the longest in the South American country.
The structure, which boasts a 400-meter-long cable-stayed central section, is being built by Rio Negro Consortium, a joint venture of Camargo Correa and Construbase who started work in 2008 after winning the contract from the Amazonas state government.
ADOLPHO LISBOA MUNICIPAL MARKET
Inaugurated in 1882, the market is a copy of the now gone Les Halles Market in Paris, France. It is a marketing center for typical Amazonian products.
